World number 18 Liudmila Samsonova came back from a set down to survive an early scare against Katerina Siniakova on Tuesday. The 24-year-old won three WTA titles in the space of two months this time last season but she failed to defend the first of those last week in Washington, losing to new champion Coco Gauff in the semi-finals. World number 24 Qinwen Zheng recently claimed her maiden WTA title at the Palermo Ladies Open and after an early exit in Washington she looked strong on Tuesday, beating in-form Marta Kostyuk in three sets. The 21-year-old finished runner-up to Samsonova in her maiden tour final at the Tokyo Open last October and this is already the third meeting between them since, with the Russian taking their semi-final in Abu Dhabi and Zheng returning the favour, both in three sets, at the Miami Masters. The pair share a fascinating, tight 2-2 head-to-head record that suggests there are sets in this for both players so back Samsonova to earn at least a set as the likelier on a hardcourt to edge through.
