THE PREDICTION
World number 18 Liudmila Samsonova is the defending champion at the Washington Open and she is playing like it so far, conceding just four games apiece to tough foes in Danielle Collins and Sorana Cirstea. The 24-year-old has struggled to find her imperious best in recent months but she won three WTA titles across the late hardcourt swing last season, adding Cleveland and Tokyo to her trophy here when the competition was a 250 event. 21-year-old Marta Kostyuk will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 32nd after upsetting second seed Caroline Garcia in assured fashion on Thursday. The Ukrainian will receive the lion’s share, if not all, of the support in Washington when pitted against a Russian foe and she is learning to utilise that on tour as she continues to mature into the future top 10 player she has the potential to be. Kostyuk came back from a set down to beat Bianca Andreescu in the first round for a hugely impressive run but Samsonova has the pedigree here. Sentiment aside, Samsonova should be able to edge through on this first tour-level meeting between the two.
