THE PREDICTION
World number 17 Madison Keys has looked solid do far in New York with two consummate victories over Arantxa Rus and Yanina Wickmayer. The 28-year-old finished runner-up to Sloane Stephens back in 2017 but after a drab period before the pandemic she has rediscovered some of her best tennis to reach the semi-finals of the Australian Open last season and more recently the quarter-finals at Wimbledon. World number 15 Liudmila Samsonova won three WTA titles in as many months this time last season on hardcourts and she reached a first Masters final last month before succumbing to exhaustion against Jessica Pegula in Montreal. 24-year-old Samsonova has also made the third round without dropping a set after two solid results over Claire Liu and Tamara Korpatsch and this looks set to be a serious tussle on Saturday with the pair sharing a stories head-to-head with a win apiece.
Samsonova beat Keys in three-sets en-route to the Berlin Open title in 2021 but Keys returned the favour in three on her way to the Adelaide 1 title last January. Back Keys to earn at least a set as the victor of their hardcourt match and with home advantage behind her or consider a one-off on the match to see three sets.
