World number 18 Liudmila Samsonova reached the semi-finals of the Washington Open as the defending champion last week but she lost in straight sets to new champion Coco Gauff. The 24-year-old won three of her four WTA titles on the late hardcourt swing last season and she stands to lose a lot of ranking points if she cannot find her mojo on the surface soon after a mixed, at best, year so far. World number 46 Katerina Siniakova recently won the fourth WTA title of her career, at least in singles, with a solid week at the Bad Homburg Open and she beat Samsonova in three sets in the quarter-finals there. The Czech has struggled to match that intensity since, though, and whilst Samsonova is an excellent grass-courter too there should be a bigger gulf between them in the Russian’s favour in these conditions. Back Samsonova to win outright.
