World number 22 Jelena Ostapenko made a statement start to her Madrid Open campaign with a dominant display over rising star Linda Fruhvirtova, conceding just three games to the teenager. The 25-year-old’s raw power should be well catered for by Madrid’s high altitude and she should always be considered a threat at any clay tournament after winning the 2017 Roland-Garros title at barely 20 years old. World number 18 Liudmila Samsonova conceded just five games to Maryna Zanevska on Thursday for a solid start. The Russian is at her best on a hardcourt but, again, the unique conditions in Madrid take some of the sting out of clay-court tennis for those who would prefer a faster court. Ostapenko has won both of their previous encounters in straight sets but Samsonova is much improved on their last battle in the semi-finals of the Luxembourg Open in 2021. Back Ostapenko to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance, although the Latvian should be squeaking through here.
