After an erratic start to 2023 world number 18 Liudmila Samsonova looks in rude health at the Madrid Open, conceding just seven games across two matches against Maryna Zanevska and a hammering of Jelena Ostapenko. The 24-year-old already has four WTA title to her name since bursting onto the scene in the summer of 2021 but she has yet to enjoy a significant deep run on clay, although Madrid’s high altitude suits her faster game well for a clay court. World number 35 Irina Camelia-Begu stunned in-form Karolina Muchova on Thursday and backed it up with a strong result over Shelby Rogers in the third round. The 32-year-old is the much more natural clay courter, with her most recent of five WTA titles won on the surface last summer in Palermo, but back Samsonova in this vein of form to earn at least a set in a first meeting between the two to leave the victor up to chance.
