World number 15 Liudmila Samsonova comes into the US Open as a significant dark horse after reaching her first Masters final in Montreal, where she was unfortunate to have to play two matches in a row in a one-sided final against Jessica Pegula. The 24-year-old stunned the likes of Elena Rybakina and Aryna Sabalenka three weeks ago to bring some serious hardcourt form into New York but a first round defeat in Cincinnati two weeks ago throws a little doubt over her mental readiness here. World number 69 Claire Liu lost the Chicago Challenger to Viktoriya Tomova on Saturday but that and a recent run to the semi-finals of the Hungarian Open last month suggest she is finding her feet again on tour after a poor past 12 months. Samsonova had to come back from a set down to beat the American in Abu Dhabi in February and home advantage should bolster Liu’s resolve here. The sensible option is taking Samsonova to win outright but she should , realistically, be coming through in two.
