18-year-old Linda Noskova set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 45th this week based mostly on her excellent early season form in Adelaide, where she beat three top 20 players before finishing runner-up to Aryna Sabalenka. The Czech rising star has played steadily on tour, for the most part, ever since but she remains very inexperienced on grass despite a strong straight-sets opener over Kateryna Baindl on Monday. World number 15 Liudmila Samsonova won her maiden WTA title at the 2021 Berlin Open before a run to the round of 16 at Wimbledon to prove her credentials on the surface but she has struggled across surfaces over the last few months. The Russian’s powerful hitting and varied toolkit for grass makes her the clear favourite in this first meeting with Noskova but she will need to improve a lot this week in Bad Homburg if she hopes to beat her career-best run at SW19 next week. Back Samsonova to win outright here with three sets a distinct possibility.
