THE PREDICTION
2017 Roland-Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko has absolutely no interest in losing to rising stars on tour. The 25-year-old conceded just two games to Linda Fruhvirtova at the Dubai Masters back in February in a show of defiance and she has all the tools she needs to win the Madrid Open if she can harness that spirit for the entire fortnight. World number 58 Fruhvirtova beat Katie Volynets in straight sets on Tuesday to get a solid foothold in the tournament but she will need to improve on her recent results on clay if she is to cause the upset here. The 17-year-old favours clay but she has so far found most of her joy on hardcourts since joining the WTA tour. Madrid’s high altitude should favour both players’ power in this potential thriller but it is hard to see Ostapenko letting this one slide. Back the Latvian to win outright, although two should do it.
