THE PREDICTION
29-year-old Lin Zhu set a career-high WTA world ranking of 33rd earlier this season after a brilliant run to the round of 16 at the Australian Open saw her ride the momentum through to a maiden title at the Hua Hin Championships. The Chinese also reached the semi-finals of the Monterrey Open in February before defeat to eventual champion Donna Vekic and she takes a three-match losing streak into the main draw in Madrid after struggling since. This is the third meeting between Lin and Rebecca Marino this season in a tour-level head-to-head the Chinese leads 2-0 but Marino came very close to levelling things in a three-set battle in Monterrey. Neither player brings convincing recent form into the first round here but back Lin Zhu to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
