World number four Caroline Garcia conceded just three games to Katherine Sebov in a mis-match first round opener to get a promising Australian Open campaign underway. The 29-year-old ticked off another career milestone by winning the WTA Finals in November in her best season on tour, with three other titles won across all three surfaces including the Cincinnati Masters. Garcia will no doubt be targeting a maiden Grand Slam title this season and she should be considered a genuine contender in this mood.
THE PREDICTION
There is little else left for Caroline Garcia to do for the first time in tennis but 20-year-old Leylah Fernandez has done one of them by reaching the US Open final in 2021. The Canadian won a lot of fans in New York with battling displays against a field of former world number ones and Grand Slam champions before coming unstuck against Emma Raducanu in the final and she should be considered a serious threat to Garcia here after an impressive straight-sets opener over Alize Cornet. This first meeting between the two could be the match of the day for entertainment on Thursday but Garcia has been a consistent high performer for over half a year now and she should be coming through the outright victor. Fernandez is brilliant from a set down, though, and taking the Canadian to earn at least a set could be the better value move here – outside of an accumulator.
