World number 35 Leylah Fernandez was the first player to succumb to Mirra Andreeva’s remarkable debut here last season and she looks in danger of crashing out early once again here. World number 39 Anastasia Potapova beat fellow Russian Diana Shnaider in straight sets on Tuesday to look a serious threat, continuing in the form that saw her reach the quarter-finals at Indian Wells last month. The 23-year-old has lost both of her previous encounters with Fernandez in straight sets, including on clay at Roland-Garros three years ago, but she brings the better recent form into this third edition, with Fernandez losing four of her last five on tour.
