THE PREDICTION
World number eight Daria Kasatkina beat fellow Russian Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in straight sets on Friday to get her Madrid Open campaign underway. The 25-year-old is at her best on clay, on which she reached the semi-finals of Roland-Garros last season before defeat to eventual champion Iga Swiatek, but she has suffered a strange start to 2023 with some great runs and shock early exits that make it hard to back her with confidence just yet. Former world number 23 Lesia Tsurenko came back from a set down to oust Jil Teichmann on Friday as she continues to enjoy excellent form on the natural surfaces over the last year or so. The current world number 77 stands a decent chance at a huge upset here if she takes to court but she has struggled with facing Russian and Belarussian opposition, quite understandably, since the war in Ukraine broke out last year. That makes this match well worth leaving out of an accumulator as there is a chance it may not be completed but otherwise take Kasatkina to earn at least a set and leave the victor up to chance.
