THE PREDICTION
World number four Casper Ruud finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Roland-Garros earlier this month in his third Grand Slam final within 12 months. The 24-year-old finished runner-up to Rafael Nadal in his first in Paris last summer before performing a little better in a four-set defeat to Carlos Alcaraz in the US Open final in September. Ruud is perennially underestimated on tour but even he has seemed to dismiss any chances of a run at Wimbledon by taking a break instead of getting grass matches in his legs, with just one win claimed at SW19 so far since his debut in 2019.
28-year-old Laurent Lokoli qualified well this week to make his Wimbledon debut and whilst the Frenchman has lost al four of his previous Grand Slam matches he has, notably, earned at least a set in each of them. The world number 198 went two sets up against Michael Mmoh in Melbourne back in January before defeat to make it three of his four matches at this level going to five sets. Ruud may have played the right card here by taking all the pressure off himself coming into Wimbledon but it is probably worth a one-off on Lokoli to earn at least a set here given the Norwegian’s record.
