THE PREDICTION

World number 50 Lauren Davis conceded just four games to Danka Kovinic on Monday to get a string foothold in at the US Open and she is one win away from emulating her best run here last season. The 29-year-old started 2023 off in excellent form to win her second WTA title at the Hobart International and she has impressed in patches since, most notably taking Jessica Pegula to three sets at Wimbledon before a three-set victory over former US Open champion Sloane Stephens in Washington. World number 145 Kaja Juvan is a player capable of much better tennis than her current deflated ranking suggests and she proved that on Monday with a straight-sets victory over 29th seed Elisabetta Cocciaretto, backing up some momentum from qualifying. The 22-year-old is at her best on clay but well capable of rolling on her current streak in this wide open clash with Davis but the American won their only tour-level encounter in straight sets last summer. Back Davis to earn at least a set as the likelier of two very capable victors.
