World number 32 Elise Mertens came back from a set down to Garbine Muguruza on Tuesday to snap a recent run of poor form in singles – with her doubles results remaining healthy as ever as the current WTA Finals champion alongside Veronika Kudermetova. The Belgian should take some confidence from the first round but beating former world number Muguruza is much simpler these days as the Spaniard continues to struggle with some concerning form. All that is to say that world number 57 Lauren Davis has a very good chance at pulling off the upset here after coming back from a set down to oust Danka Kovinic on Tuesday to make it six wins on the spin. The 29-year-old claimed the second WTA title of her career in Hobart last week without dropping a set – including in qualifying – and that will be some serious momentum for Mertens to have to combat. With three sets likely, back Davis to earn at least one and leave the victor up to chance.
