THE PREDICTION
World number 50 Lauren Davis won the second WTA title of her career at the Hobart International back in January and she has impressed in parts of this season after a few years in the wilderness. The 29-year-old plays an exciting brand of tennis when she finds some rhythm and she will enjoy the partisan atmosphere in this promising opener against Danka Kovinic, whom she beat from a set down in the first round of the Australian Open after Hobart. This is the third meeting between the pair this season after world number 94 Kovinic took their meeting, also from a set down, at the Auckland Classic and the pair have met four times in total with a finely poised 2-2 head-to-head to show for it. Davis has won at least a set in all four of their previous matches to offer the sensible option here but Kovinic brings very little form into New York after an injury lay-off over the summer. Back Davis to win outright.
