World number 57 Laslo Djere is always a threat on his favoured clay and he proved that on Friday by upsetting defending champion Lorenzo Musetti in straight sets. The 28-year-old has also beaten in-form clay-courter Tomas Martin Etcheverry and former world number 20 Guido Pella this week to earn his place in the last four and he faces a huge opportunity not only to reach the Hamburg 500 final but potentially win it as the most comfortable player in this surface left in the draw. World number 79 Zhizhen Zhang is a significant test, though, after the Chinese beat back-to-back home hopefuls in Yannick Hanfmann and Daniel Altmaier to reach the semi-finals on tour for the first time. The 26-year-old burst into form on clay at the Madrid Open back in May with two huge wins over Cam Norrie and Taylor Fritz but this first meeting with Djere will be a totally different test with no clear favourite. Three sets seem likelier than two here so back Djere to earn at least one of them or avoid the result altogether in favour of at least one tiebreak in the match between two hardy scrappers.
