THE PREDICTION
This should be a thrilling semi-final on Friday between former world number three Dominic Thiem, who will be backed to the hilt by a partisan atmosphere, and in-form clay specialist Laslo Djere. 29-year-old Thiem is currently ranked outside the top 100 as he continues to struggle on his comeback from wrist surgery last season but he has fought tooth and nail to stay in the draw at Kitzbuhel, where he won the title in 2019, and Thursday’s win over Arthur Rinderknech was his most encouraging this week. World number 38 Laslo Djere is yet to drop a set here, though, and a straight-sets victory over Gstaad Open champion Pedro Cachin yesterday was his best yet. The 28-year-old finished runner-up to Alexander Zverev at the Hamburg Open last week to break back inside the top 40 and he looks the slight favourite on form and as the winner of their only previous encounter on clay, with Thiem levelling their head-to-head at 1-1 in Tel Aviv last year. Back Djere to earn at least a set, considering Thiem’s results this week, to leave the victor up to chance or consider the three-set option here.
