THE PREDICTION
28-year-old Laslo Djere is just seven places away from a career-high ATP world ranking of 27th after his recent exploits on his favoured clay, first finishing runner-up to Alexander Zverev at the Hamburg 500 before a semi-final exit to Dominic Thiem in Kitzbuhel. The Serb is a very capable all-courter who always provides intensity on court but he is certainly less effective away from the red surface and home underdog Alex Michelsen certainly stands a chance at the upset. 18-year-old Michelsen will move inside the top 130 on tour for the first time after two strong wins over Juan Pablo Varillas and Sebastian Ofner at Winston-Salem. The American reached the Hall of Fame Open final in only his second tour-level tournament last month, beating the likes of defending champion Maxime Cressy, four-time champion John Isner and Mackenzie McDonald before defeat to Adrian Mannarino. Djere should have enough recent form in his legs to avoid the scare here but a one-off on Michelsen to earn at least a set could be the shrewd move.
