THE PREDICTION
Former world number five Kevin Anderson is impressing on his comeback from retirement so far but this will be a considerably tougher test than his first two wins over Gabriel Diallo and Gijs Brouwer in Newport. The 37-year-old veteran claimed the most recent of his seven career ATP titles here in 2021 but his greatest achievement by far was finishing runner-up to Novak Djokovic at Wimbledon in 2018, proving his credentials on grass. World number 40 Ugo Humbert is also an excellent grass-courter as a former Halle Open champion two years ago and after a woeful 2022 the Frenchman is slowly repairing his career in 2023. A straight-sets victory over Steve Johnson on Wednesday is a solid way to start the Hall of Fame Open but he will need plenty of grit to tackle Anderson, who saved seven break points yesterday to keep his serve safe throughout. Humbert beat the South African in straight sets at the Italian Open three years ago but this looks set to come much closer. Consider taking at least a tiebreak in the match, with both players no strangers to a tight set, to leave the victor up to chance.
