THE PREDICTION
23-year-old Kayla Day made her US Open debut at 17 years old back in 2017, with this only her second appearance in New York. The American will come in at a career-high WTA world ranking of 91st after some excellent results on the ITF circuit and her excellent run to the third round at Roland-Garros in June, where she stunned Madison Keys for a career-best result. World number 30 Sorana Cirstea should have more than enough to come through this tricky opener with a young home hopeful but the Romanian’s form has been erratic this year. A remarkable March saw her reach the round of 16 at Indian Wells before the semi-finals in Miami and the last four players to beat her were ranked inside the top 25. Day is well capable of utilising the crowd to snatch at least a set but on this occasion taking Cirstea to win in two seems a reasonable risk.
