World number 44 Tatjana Maria also blasted through her opening match against Arianne Hartono on Tuesday and she made the second round in Melbourne before a stiff defeat to Jasmine Paolini – who also lost to the aforementioned Kalinskaya in Melbourne. 36-year-old Maria recently set a new career-high of 42nd, a wholly remarkable achievement at this stage of her career, but she has struggled to maintain consistency in recent months, failing to win back-to-back matches on tour since September. That leaves this first tour-level clash up for grabs on Thursday so consider taking the three-set alternative here or backing fourth seed Maria to earn at least one to avoid the result.
