World number three Elena Rybakina is playing herself into form at Wimbledon, beating a tricky Alize Cornet in straight sets after a three-set opener over Shelby Rogers. The defending champion came into SW19 with huge doubts over her fitness after recently suffering with a virus that saw her withdraw from Roland-Garros but her progression so far this week says she is now a clear contender for the title once again. 26-year-old Katie Boulter will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of 71st after reaching the third round at Wimbledon for a second year in a row. The Brit handed Viktoriya Tomova an opening bagel before losing her momentum a little in the second but the match was almost always on her racket as she continues strong form on grass from her maiden WTA title won at Nottingham last month.
This first meeting with Rybakina should provide a few highlights for the British crowd cheering their last player standing on Centre Court but, without being too reductive, Rybakina is quite simply a much better version of her opponent here. The Kazakh is ice cool under pressure on court but home advantage does boost Boulter’s chances after she stunned Karolina Pliskova here on this stage last summer.
