THE PREDICTION
27-year-old Katerina Siniakova has moved up to a career-high WTA world ranking of 30th in the live tables after an excellent straight-sets victory over 24th-seed Qinwen Zheng. The Czech won her fourth WTA title at last week’s Bad Homburg Open to make it six wins on the spin on grass, something that cannot be overestimated on a surface that few players are truly familiar with. World number 60 Lesia Tsurenko needed three sets to beat Claire Liu on Monday but the Ukrainian should be better for it after struggling with her fitness in recent weeks. The 34-year-old set a career-high WTA world ranking of 23rd as recently as 2019 but she has shown flashes of that level over the past 12 months as she steadily rises up the rankings once again. Before last week’s win in Bad Homburg it would have been fair to call Tsurenko the favourite on grass but Siniakova passed a significant test on Monday with that very hard back-up.
The Czech overcame Tsurenko via retirement earlier this season at the Merida Open to trail 1-2 in their head-to-head and she can be backed to earn at least a set here as the likelier of two very capable winners.
