THE PREDICTION

Former world number one Karolina Pliskova takes on former world number three Sloane Stephens in a blockbuster first round clash on Monday. World number 35 Stephens is coming off a strong few weeks of form on clay with a Challenger title won in France before a run to the semi-finals of the Rabat Open this week was ended by eventual champion Lucia Bronzetti and she leads Pliskova 4-1 in their head-to-head. World number 16 Pliskova’s only win in that record came on clay at the Madrid Open in 2018 but Stephens levelled things on the surface with a straight-sets victory here in Paris two years ago. Pliskova is a tough player to back with full confidence these days but the Czech can burst into form at a moment’s notice and she has won each of her last 25 first round matches since an early exit here in 2016. Back the Czech to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors based on that remarkable record at majors.
