THE PREDICTION

World number 36 Karolina Pliskova made short work of qualifier Ena Shibahara on Sunday but the Czech has failed to win back-to-back matches on tour since making the quarter-finals of the Stuttgart Open in April. The former world number one suffers more troughs than peaks these days but she is always capable of finding enough rhythm to go deep at this level, particularly on hardcourts, with motivation seemingly her biggest foe. World number 174 Hailey Baptiste beat wildcard Lya Fernandez in comfortable straight sets on Sunday to set up this very enticing second round clash. The 21-year-old grabbed perhaps the biggest win of her young career against Pliskova in three sets at the Washington Open last month, before losing in the round of 16 to eventual champion Coco Gauff, but that was her most recent tour-level win until yesterday. Pliskova is a tough player to back with confidence but she should be targeting a deep run at this underpowered Guadalajara Masters. Taking Baptiste to earn at least a set is tempting but the advisable pick is an outright win for Pliskova. Leave this one well away from an accumulator.
