THE PREDICTION
Former world number one Karolina Pliskova conceded just five games to Elena-Gabriela Ruse on Tuesday to suggest she has brought some much-needed focus to the US Open. The current world number 25 finished runner-up to Angelique Kerber here in 2016 and more recently to Ash Barty at Wimbledon in 2021 to look like becoming one of the most talented players never to lift a major title but she can never be fully ruled out at this level despite poor form on tour. A run to the quarter-finals of the Australian Open back in January is proof of that, with the Czech reaching the last eight here in back-to-back seasons amidst plenty of drab runs elsewhere. World number 62 Clara Burel reached the third round of the US Open last summer before a heavy defeat to Aryna Sabalenka and she looks set for a similar fate against another big-server. The 22-year-old beat Caroline Dolehide in straight sets on Tuesday to get a solid start but Pliskova should be coming through this first encounter in straight sets. It is probably wise to leave the Czech’s matches out of accumulators for the foreseeable future, though.
