THE PREDICTION

World number 132 Taylor Townsend produced one of the best performances of her career to stun 19th seed Beatriz Haddad-Maia in tight straight sets on Wednesday. The wildcard is yet to drop a set this campaign on momentum from her Women’s Doubles title-winning run alongside Alycia Parks in Cincinnati two weeks ago and she will finally receive the attention she deserves at the US Open after being overlooked for so long by the USTA. World number 10 Karolina Muchova, also 27, remains the heavy favourite after blasting through her first two rounds with just 10 games conceded but this will be the Czech’s toughest test so far as she faces a player with little to lose and a partisan crowd. Muchova finished runner-up to Iga Swiatek at Roland-Garros back in June to prove herself capable of anything if she can maintain her injury-prone body and she finished second to Coco Gauff in Cincinnati last time out to look ready for a deep run in New York. Despite her exploits, Townsend will do well to take a set from an in form Muchova. Back the Czech to win outright inside an accumulator or in straight sets on its own.
