THE PREDICTION

This should be a fierce and likely thrilling battle on Friday between world number 27 Irina-Camelia Begu, who reached the round of 16 here last season, and former world number 19 Karolina Muchova. 32-year-old Begu handed old foe Sara Errani a second-set bagel in a mis-match on Wednesday to back-up a solid opener over Anna Bondar and she is often overlooked on tour as one of the most consistent performers on her favoured clay. The Romanian beat Muchova in straight sets at the Madrid Open just over a month ago on a run to the quarter-finals before defeat from a set up to Maria Sakkari and she leads Muchova 2-0 in their head-to-head after also taking their first encounter here in Paris four years ago.

However, 26-year-old Muchova upset Sakkari in straight sets on Sunday to announce herself as the most dangerous unseeded player in the draw and she is a player of top 10 quality when her injury-prone body allows her enough time to find some rhythm on tour. Three sets seem likely here to offer a risky alternative but back the more explosive Muchova to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance.
