THE PREDICTION
World number 37 Camila Giorgi survived an early scare on Wednesday with a comeback over qualifier Arantxa Rus but she was markedly improved on Friday in an impressive straight-sets victory over Ekaterina Alexandrova. The 31-year-old is a popular home favourite here in Rome but whilst home advantage will be of some help she is one of the more distant players on tour, requiring nothing less than laser focus to produce her high quality but high percentage game. World number 52 Karolina Muchova will enjoy the atmosphere no matter the support as one of the fiercer battlers on tour and she has already knocked out one Italian this week with an impressive comeback over 18th seed Martine Trevisan on Friday. The 26-year-old is working hard to bring her ranking back up following a long injury lay-off and whilst clay is probably her least effective surface she should be able to overpower her opponent enough to squeak through here. Muchova beat Giorgi in three sets at Wimbledon two years ago and she can be backed to edge this outright once again, although at least a set would be the wise concession for an accumulator.
