World number 63 Gregoire Barrere continued his strong recent form with a straight-sets victory over an out-of-sorts Brandon Nakashima on Wednesday. The 29-year-old recently beat Cam Norrie at the Miami Open for a career-best victory but he has enjoyed a few impressive results this season to set a career-high ATP world ranking of 56th late last month. 26-year-old Karen Khachanov is just three places behind his own career-high of eighth that he set back in 2019 after winning the Paris Masters the season before but that remains his most recent of four ATP titles. The Russian has thoroughly improved over the last 12 months after several years of struggling for rhythm and he has lost to the eventual champion in each of his last three Masters tournaments: Daniil Medvedev at the Miami Open, Andrey Rublev in Monte-Carlo and Carlos Alcaraz last time out in Madrid. Khachanov beat Barrere in four sets on clay at Roland-Garros back in 2019 and taking him to win outright looks the sensible concession here given Barrere’s recent form.
