THE PREDICTION

There will be plenty of attention on this match between Russia’s Kamilla Rakhimova and Belarussia’s Aryna Sabalenka on Friday after world number two Sabalenka refused once again to comment on her stance on the war in Ukraine in an uncomfortable press conference on Wednesday. On the court, the 25-year-old was initially troubled by compatriot Iryna Shymanovich before coming through relatively comfortably in the end and she remains Iga Swiatek’s main competitor, alongside Elena Rybakina, here in Paris after recently beating the Pole to the Madrid Masters title. 21-year-old Rakhimova will set a new career-high WTA world ranking of around 62nd after reaching the third round without dropping a set and she could well benefit here if her opponent fails to concentrate on the match at hand.

In normal service Sabalenka could be backed to come through in straight sets here but there are enough outside factors, and Rakhimova has played well enough in recent weeks, to warrant caution. Take Sabalenka to win outright here or leave this one alone altogether.
