22-year-old Elisabetta Cocciaretto will be seeded at a Grand Slam for the first time here in New York after recently winning her maiden WTA title at the Ladies Open Lausanne last month. The Italian set a career-high WTA world ranking of 29th after the feat on her favoured clay but she has impressed on hardcourts too this season, finishing runner-up to Lauren Davis on the surface at the Hobart International at the starts of the year. Former world number 58 Kaja Juvan has the potential to one day break the top 30 herself but the Slovenian has struggled to find any sort of rhythm on tour practically ever since finishing runner-up to Angelique Kerber in Strasbourg last summer. The 22-year-old struggled through qualifying but she is well capable of finding a sudden hot streak in this first meeting with Cocciaretto. The Italian should be coming through outright but taking her to earn at least a set would be the suitably cautious concession for an accumulator.
