THE PREDICTION

World number 20 Madison Keys reached the semi-finals at Roland-Garros back in 2018 and then the quarter-finals a year later, with a run to the round of 16 this time last season suggesting she could be a genuine outsider this fortnight. The 28-year-old only recently made the semi-finals of a Grand Slam at last season’s Australian Open and she has reached the last eight of a major on eight occasions, including that famous US Open final when she finished runner-up to Sloane Stephens in 2017. World number 76 Kaia Kanepi reached the quarter-finals at the Australian Open last season to complete her set of last eight finishes at majors, with seven in total including twice here in Paris in 2008 and 2012. The 37-year-old veteran enjoyed a brilliant renaissance year last season but she has so far been a shadow of it in 2023. Kanepi is a renowned giant-killer at this level, though, and that makes it worth leaving this match out of any promising accumulators. Keys leads their head-to-head 2-1 but Kanepi won their only clay encounter at the Madrid Masters back in 2015. Back Keys to win this outright all the same.
