THE PREDICTION

18-year-old Juncheng Shang qualified well this week to make his Roland-Garros debut and he won his overall Grand Slam debut in four sets over Oscar Otte at the Australian Open back in January. The world number 200 ousted Fabian Marozsan, who recently stunned Carlos Alcaraz in Rome, in qualifying to look sharp ahead of this first encounter with world number 94 Juan Pablo Varillas but the Peruvian has enjoyed some of his best moments on tour at Grand Slams over the past 12 months. Varillas won the first two sets of his major debut here last summer before losing in five to Felix Auger-Aliassime and he took Alexander Zverev to five in Melbourne this summer before just being edge out. The 27-year-old has much more experience on clay behind him but Shang’s momentum from qualifying is hard to ignore, as is his win in Melbourne. Consider this match for a one-off five-set punt but otherwise take Shang to earn at least two sets as the just-about likelier victor.
