THE LOWDOWN
24-year-old Frances Tiafoe burst onto the scene here in Melbourne back in 2019 with a run to the quarter-finals eventually ended by Rafael Nadal but the American avenged that loss at the US Open last September, beating the Spaniard in the round of 16 before losing to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz in a five-set semi-final epic. The defeat in New York looks to have changed Tiafoe for good as he comes into the Australian Open at a career-high ATP ranking of 17th playing his usual brand of entertaining tennis but with a steelier lookbehind the eyes in recent months.
THE PREDICTION
It was not easy in a four-set tussle against Daniel Altmaier on Monday but Tiafoe should be the better for it in this second round match with 17-year-old Juncheng Shang, whose surprise factor is lost now after stunning Oscar Otte in the first round. Shang will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of around 162nd after an incredible Grand Slam debut ended in a first tour-level win but it would be the shock of the tournament so far to see anything other than a Tiafoe victory. Back the American outright, though, considering their opening four-set results.
