World number 67 Jule Niemeier brings a totally unconvincing seven-match losing streak into the main draw at the Madrid Open but the German has looked competitive in recent matches and there is no doubt over her potential. 21-year-old Xinyu Wang set a career-high WTA world ranking of 59th recently after a strong showing across Indian Wells and the Miami Open but she has very little experience on clay. The Chinese up-and-comer has enjoyed the much better recent form, though, and high altitude in Madrid often takes some of the sting off of clay tennis for the bigger hitters on tour.
