World number 21 Ekaterina Alexandrova received a bye to the round of 16 at the Linz Open as the second seed this week and she should be ready to bounce back from a shock three-set first round exit to Laura Siegemund at the Australian Open two weeks ago. The 29-year-old had stunned Elena Rybakina in straight sets in Brisbane the week before to look a genuine deep-run threat in Melbourne but she takes a two-match losing streak into this first clash with Jule Niemier. 24-year-old Niemeier beat Anna Blinkova, who herself stunned Rybakina with that historic 22-20 tiebreak in Melbourne two weeks ago, to snap a poor run of form but this looks a considerable step-up. The German is yet to drop a set this week in Linz after blasting through qualifying but back the usually dependable Alexandrova to reach the quarter-finals, possessing the power to match Niemeier’s sledgehammer arm.
