THE PREDICTION
World number 87 Juan Pablo Varillas made the main draw of the Madrid Open for the first time this year and without the need for qualifying after enjoying a strong season so far. The Peruvian’s best run saw him exit to Cam Norrie in the semi-finals of the Argentina Open back in February but he has enjoyed some great results on clay on the Challenger circuit over the past six months or so. World number 108 Yannick Hanfmann is always a handful on his favoured clay too and he qualified well this week without dropping a set to look battle-hardened ahead of this first meeting between the two. High altitude in Madrid offers the harder hitters on tour an extra few percent on their shots and having come through qualifying Hanfmann should be the more acclimatised here. Back the German to earn at least a set as the likelier of two capable victors.
