THE PREDICTION

World number nine Taylor Fritz conceded just five games to tour veteran Steve Johnson on Monday in a kind opener. The 25-year-old is the US number one in New York with a point to prove after some sub-par exits in recent weeks; to Tallon Griekspoor in Washington, Alex de Minaur in Toronto and then an expected but still particularly one-sided defeat to Novak Djokovic in Cincinnati. Fritz added Delray Beach and Atlanta to his now six career ATP titles but he has underperformed at Grand Slam level, particularly at the US Open with two third round exits his best showing so far. The American has lost in the second round at both the Australian Open and Wimbledon this season to look fragile here but world number 74 Juan Pablo Varillas should not cause too much fuss as a clay-court specialist. The Peruvian played well to come back from a set down against an out-of-sorts Miomir Kecmanovic on Monday but Fritz should have too much power in these conditions, particularly last on Arthur Ashe in a partisan atmosphere. The match should fall in three sets but take Fritz to win outright inside an accumulator.
