Both world number 119 Arthur Fils and number 105 Juan Manuel Cerundolo qualified well to make their Italian Open debuts and this is a huge opportunity to make the second round. 18-year-old Fils is making his overall Masters debut here but he has already burst onto the scene this season with back-to-back semi-finals reached at the Montpellier Open and Marseille Open back in February. A brief lull in form transitioning from indoor hardcourts to clay was to be expected but he will be well-backed as an exciting young talent in line to qualify for the Next Gen ATP Finals later this year. 21-year-old Cerundolo enjoyed an even more impressive introduction to tour life by winning the Cordoba Open on his debut back in 2021 but he has struggled to match that initial intensity practically ever since. The Argentine has more Masters experience than Fils but his teenage opponent should feel the more free of the two in this first encounter and backing him to earn at least a set seems the sensible way to lean here.
