THE PREDICTION

25-year-old Ugo Humbert has endured a rough couple of years on tour, with seasons of strong work unravelled in 2022 when he contracted covid-19 at the Australian Open, but the Frenchman completed a remarkable comeback trail in 2023 from outside the top 100 up to a current career-high of 20th. Humbert ended 2023 with a statement trophy in front of home fans at the Metz Open, his fourth ATP title overall and a first since his best at Halle in 2021, and he began 2024 in similar gusto to beat Alex Michelsen in straight sets on Wednesday. World number 55 Jordan Thompson quietly went about a restorative year of his own last season, moving within a few strong runs of his career-high ATP world ranking of 43rd. A comfortable victory over fellow Aussie Aleksandar Vukic was a strong start to his 2024 and he is enjoying a strong run in the men’s doubles alongside Max Purcell to add more matches ahead of the Australian Open.

Powerful left-hander Humbert should have too many weapons to lose this first encounter but perennial underdog Thompson will have the full backing of a partisan crowd in Brisbane. Back Humbert to earn at least a set to leave the victor up to chance and consider adding a tiebreak between two industrious players.
