THE PREDICTION
This will be the first tour-level clash between fellow Aussies Jordan Thompson and Rinky Hijikata but it is their third meeting on court this season overall, and a second in as many weeks after Thompson beat the younger man in the quarter-finals of the Surbiton Challenger last week. World number 103 Thompson came back from a set down to oust an impressive Adrian Mannarino on Friday, to whom he lost in the final here back in 2019, to back-up an excellent result over the returning Milos Raonic in the round of 16. 22-year-old Hijikata also came back from a set down on Friday against Mackenzie McDonald to reach the semi-finals at a tour event for the first time and he will set a new career-high of around 114th for his trouble. A straight-sets defeat to Thompson in Surbiton last week suggests the youngster will struggle to match his compatriot’s experience in these conditions but the shrewd move could be taking this likely thriller to see three sets. Otherwise, back Thompson to earn at least a set.
