THE PREDICTION
World number 70 Jordan Thompson has impressed on grass over the last few weeks, including a fierce run to the Libema Open final before losing from a set up to Tallon Griekspoor. The 29-year-old is one of the better players in these conditions outside the top 50 but this is still an unfortunate draw against world number 55 Brandon Nakashima, who reached the round of 16 here last summer. 21-year-old Nakashima came closer than anyone to halting Nick Kyrgios’ run to the final in a five-set thriller last season but the American has struggled on the surface so far in what has been a tough season so far after his excellent 2022 campaign. Nakashima leads Thompson 3-1 in their lead-to-head but a first match on grass will level the playing field a little. Each of their four matches have seen at least one tiebreak, though, so take that option in lieu of siding with a winner here.
