World number 16 Ben Shelton is enjoying a strong week in Dallas so far, beating Michael Mmoh in straight sets on Thursday as well as reaching the semi-finals in doubles alongside Emilio Nava. The 21-year-old suffered a bruising defeat to Adrian Mannarino in five thrilling sets at the Australian Open last month to prove that raw power is not everything in tennis but at his best the American has a hugely promising skillset to match that punishing left-handed serve. 29-year-old Jordan Thompson has enjoyed a similarly excellent campaign here with two consummate victories in singles as well as a run to the semis-finals in doubles alongside Max Purcell. The Aussie will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 42nd as he continues to play some of the best tennis of his career and it could have been so different in Melbourne as he just lost out to Stefanos Tsitsipas from a set up in the second round.
Shelton represents a significant step up in quality for Thompson but the Aussie took the first set before losing their first encounter at the Tokyo Open last October, where Shelton went on to win his maiden ATP title. The sensible call is backing Shelton to win outright but a tiebreak is never far from either players’ matches, to suggest a potentially shrewd combination of at least a tiebreak and a set for Thompson could be on the cards here.
