World number 38 Adrian Mannarino beat Rinky Hijikata in straight sets on Wednesday to get his Hall of Fame Open campaign underway strongly. The 35-year-old has enjoyed an excellent grass swing but he will be disappointed to leave it without a title after back-to-back quarter-finals in ‘s-Hertogenbosch and Queen’s before finishing runner-up to Christopher Eubanks in Mallorca. World number 69 Jordan Thompson beat the Frenchman in that first quarter-final en-route to a runner-up finish of his own to Tallon Griekspoor but he trails Mannarino 4-2 in an interesting head-to-head record and notably 3-1 on grass. The pair are 1-1 this season after Mannarino beat the Aussie on US soil at the hardcourt Dallas Open in February but Thompson looks strong in Newport with just five games conceded in two matches so far. Back Mannarino to earn at least a set as the just-about likelier of two very capable grass-courters to reach the semi-finals.
