World number five Stefanos Tsitsipas finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic here in 2021 in a cruel capitulation from two sets up and, despite many successes since, there is a real sense that the Greek has not been the same player since. 24-year-old Tsitsipas has claimed just two titles since the summer of 2021 and a 27-8 record for 2023 does not bode that well for a dialled-in fortnight here in Paris, although he has reached at least the quarter-finals in each of his last four tournaments on clay. Tsitsipas finished runner-up to Novak Djokovic in straight sets at the Australian Open in January and more recently to Carlos Alcaraz at the Barcelona Open. 29-year-old Jiri Vesely is an intriguing opening test for the Greek, who can often start a Grand Slam sluggishly, as a strong clay-courter on his day. The Czech comes into Paris on a protected ranking after only recently returning to tour from a long injury lay-off, though, and this will be his first tour level match since losing in the first round of the US Open last August. Back Tsitsipas to come through in straight sets.
