THE PREDICTION
World number 20 Francisco Cerundolo fought back well from a set down to beat qualifier Zachary Svajda in four on Monday and he should be better for an early scare. The 25-year-old reached new heights this summer with an excellent run to the round of 16 at a Grand Slam for the first time at Roland-Garros, taking Holger Rune to five sets before defeat, but he has impressed across all surfaces this season with strong hardcourt results in Miami and a title-winning campaign at Eastbourne on grass. Former world number 35 Jiri Vesely is currently ranked outside the top 400 on tour but the Czech is always a threat on grass and hardcourts when he can find enough fitness to compete. The 30-year-old needed five sets to overcome qualifier Enzo Couacaud on Monday to suggest that this is one step too far but it would not be a surprise to see him snatch at least a set here as a player with real pedigree at this level. Take Cerundolo to win outright for caution’s sake.
