World number 35 Jiri Lehecka overcame Dominik Koepfer in three sets on Wednesday to build on a choppy opener over Mitchell Krueger. The 21-year-old reached the quarter-finals of the Australian Open back in January to prove his credentials on a hardcourt and this is exactly the sort of tournament the Czech should be targeting for a maiden title. The same can be said for in-form Max Purcell, who will set a new career-high ATP world ranking of 43rd after an impressive straight-sets result over Tallon Griekspoor on Wednesday. The Aussie reached the quarter-finals of a Masters event for the first time last week in Cincinnati, beating Casper Ruud and Stan Wawrinka before taking the first set from Carlos Alcaraz in a valiant defeat. Rising star Lehecka has the bigger game but Purcell has the vastly better recent form. The 25-year-old has beaten three top 30 players in three weeks to suggest he has the slightest edge here but three sets seem likelier than two. In that case, take Purcell to earn at least a set – given Lehecka’s two three-setters this week – to leave the victor up to chance.
